Moorhead, MN (WDAY TV) -- A man who tried to commit suicide on the train tracks in downtown Moorhead is alive tonight, after some heroic citizens intervened.
One of them is Martial Avohou who moved to the area about 2-months ago, and was out applying for jobs, when he came across the scene.
A day of job-searching turned into a life-changing experience for Moorhead's Martial Avohou.
"I was here, when I saw a lady right there."
The woman was trying to help a man clinging to the tracks, attempting to take his life. She called out to Avohou for help.
Avohou: "I look at the train, and I saw that the train was right there."
He slid under the stop-arms and tried to pry the man from the tracks, but the man desperately fought against him.
Avohou: "He was fighting, biting me, he was fighting, and trying to go back to the train."
9-1-1 calls started pouring in from people passing by. Many were confused, and some actually thought the man was being held down onto the train tracks.
Finally, Avohou was able to drag the man away to safety. Others stopped to help, and held the man down until Moorhead police arrived.
Lt. Tory Jacobson: "I think it's just an example of great heroic attributes in our community from different individuals."
Avohou: "I believe in God, and I was saying oh, God has allowed me to save a life today. Because if I was not here, I swear to God… this guy was dead."
Moorhead Police are trying to get in touch with the woman and other Good Samaritans who helped.
