Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - If you're looking for a new hobby - you may want to think about one that's exploding in popularity. It's called geo-caching and if you want to get started, there's an app for that.

For people like Jon Kitzman, it's an obsession. He's nearing his 200th straight day of geocaching, a real-world outdoor treasure hunt. Where you're watching us from right now, you likely have a geo-cache very near you, maybe hundreds of them. Take a look at this map: each dot represents where someone has hidden a container called a geo-cache, starting a global game of hide and seek, which has more than 5 million players worldwide.

Still confused?

The official geocaching app can help. It locates where you are and within seconds the caches near you pop up on the map and by clicking them you learn clues about how to find them. We found more than 20 within a mile of the station.

So we set out to find one of them - trying the green highlighted geo-caches, marked for beginners like us.

The app unlocks the exclusive coordinates for your treasure but even though it gets you there, the cache may be a little trickier to find.

And once you find the geocache, the rules are simple

1. If you take something from the cache, leave something of equal or greater value.

2. Sign the log inside the cache.

3. Write about your experience at geocaching.com.

The app also helps you track your progress and as you get more advanced, sorts the geocaches by difficulty, terrain, location, and more. It's an instant adventure, no matter where you are, for people of all ages.

There are a number of free geocaching apps on both the Google play and Apple market but based on the reviews, Geo-Cachers said it was worth it to pay the $9.99 for the official full-featured geocaching app.
