Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - The Cass County Sheriff says he's fighting a gun control bill by North Dakota lawmakers.
The bill would make it illegal for local law enforcement to enforce new federal firearm laws. That means officers and deputies couldn't investigate, enforce, or prosecute those cases.
State Representative Bette Grande, from Fargo, helped write the bill. On the Jay Thomas Show today, Sheriff Paul Laney says if they did enforce new gun control efforts, they would be criminals.
Paul Laney, Sheriff: "So what next? Someone doesn't like federal transportation law? Now you can order it's against the law for us to enforce federal traffic regs or highway rules. Emotion starts carrying away common sense."
The state's Sheriff Association voted unanimously to fight the bill.
