Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - Fargo Police officers are fanning out across the metro to educate contractors about the increase in copper thefts.

Officers are meeting one-on-one with business owners, to make suggestions about keeping the copper wire away from thieves.

They are told to lock all buildings, install more lights, have security cameras and make sure keys are not left in construction equipment.

Thieves have been brazen enough to use victim's forklifts and trucks to move and load spools of copper.

Lt. Joel Vettel, Fargo Police: “Again it is not a large roll but with the prices high it doesn't take long before for that to get to thousands of dollars.”

The crime alert comes after three major thefts of electrical wiring from Fargo contractors. Police are stepping up patrols in the industrial park areas on the north and south side.
