Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - The goal has always been to keep our communities safe.

Shane Spiekers, Fargo: "I think people are taking things out of consideration."

Now President Obama is working to take certain guns back off the streets.

Spiekers: "But our second amendment is our second amendment. And our fore-fathers would roll in their grave."

Shane Spiekers has a military background and understands both the right and wrong ways to handle firearms.

And also knows when control might be taken too far. Today the president took his stance on what he thinks is right for our country.

President Barack Obama: "We will make it easier to keep guns out of the hands of criminals by strengthening the background check system."

An associated press poll shows six out of 10 people in America do want stricter gun laws, including the universal background checks.

Tony Owens, Fargo: "After all the shootings there have been, there should be a little more on it. People should have the right to own guns, but there should be regulations on it.”

President Obama is also shooting for a ban on military-type assault rifles and limiting the amount a magazine can hold to ten rounds.

Obama: "To make a real and lasting difference, congress too must act. And they must act soon."

But it's not going to be easy to keep these streets safe. 288 members of our congress are backed by an A rating by the NRA.

Obama: “If there is even one life that can be saved, then we've got an obligation to try."

Today, he signed the ordering pushing congress to support his decisions and hoping the U.S. will follow.

But locals say, no matter how hard we work or how much we control, criminals will find another way.

Spiekers: "There are good people and there are the bad people and the bad people will always have guns in their control. And if we give up our guns we are still going to lose and we are going to lose bad."
