Jamestown, ND (WDAY TV) -- Preservation is underway on some of the finest stained-glass windows in North Dakota.

Classic Glass crews have been working for months to protect the hand-painted windows at the Saint James Basilica, in Jamestown. The 42 works of art are nearly 100 years old. Crews have to carefully remove the glass, replace the lead that holds the pieces together, and gently re-install them.

A Fargo couple donated more than 325 thousand dollars to ensure this stained-glass sticks around for another 100.

Tracy Wallach, with Classic Glass, says, "you ask somebody what the most important part of a church is, usually stained glass is the first thing that comes up. It's the main part, it's visible to everyone, it has a very emotional and sentimental value to people."

The project is expected to wrap up this spring.
