(WDAY TV) -- The issue of gun control nationally, is effecting law enforcement here in the valley.

Law enforcement in both Clay and Cass counties has seen a delay in the amount of time it takes for their ammunition orders to come in and get back on the shelves.

Sgt. Ryan Alderman/Clay Co. Dept. Sheriff: "We're not about to just call up and have them ship it out right away. The 223, the ammo used for our rifles, that's anywhere from 8 months to a year out, as far as ordering it."

And when they do, deputies usually have to order about a two year supply.

They say the high ammunition demand is caused by conflict overseas, as well as gun control issues in the US. And law enforcement is not given any higher authority than the average purchaser.

Alderman: "The manufacturers just aren't able to produce enough for the need I guess."

But for now, deputies in both counties say they have enough on hand to keep everybody safe.

Cass County deputies say they've also seen delays in guns and parts.
