Moorhead, MN (WDAY TV) -- People crossing the river to shop in Moorhead may soon be paying more.

Minnesota lawmakers are looking into extending the state's sales tax to clothing. They're reviewing with two proposals, one that would tack on tax to any clothing item, the other just on a single item costing more than two hundred dollars.

For Moorhead retailers already fighting to keep customers coming in, owner's say this could hurt business.

Mark Bayer, Alan Evan's Bridal Co-owner, says, "that's exactly why we picked being in Moorhead 15 years ago when we opened up, was that there was no sales tax and there wasn't a bridal shop in Moorhead at all at the time. So we thought it would be a great advantage for people to not charge them sales tax."

Some lawmakers hope extending the sales tax, would actually lower the overall sales tax rate..currently about six point nine percent.
