Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - Gov. Mark Dayton has declared this "Radon Action Month" in Minnesota.
About 40 percent of Minnesota homes have dangerous levels of radon, and the Red River Valley is deemed one of the highest risk zones.
Radon is an odorless, colorless but radioactive gas and is the second leading cause of lung cancer. Health agencies across Minnesota have partnered with the Health Department to make over 8,000 radon test kits available to residents at low or no cost.
A local home inspector says it's important to get tested.
Craig Manock, Northern State Inspection: "Radon levels are really strange because what happens is this house for example could be really low, my neighbors could be really high, so the construction of the house makes a big difference in the level or levels of radon in a home. So the tighter the house is, the more the chance of higher radon levels in the house."
Manock also says, if it turns out your levels are high, make sure you hire an EPA certified installer to filter your home.
