FARGO – A broken water line along busy 42nd Street in south Fargo caused ice to build up on the roadway and forced the city to shut down one of the northbound lanes.

The leak, which apparently sprung when a water line for a lawn sprinkler system broke, happened in front of an apartment building in the 1800 block of 42nd Street South, Fargo Police Sgt. Mike Erbes said.

Fargo street crews used a plow to scrape ice off the roadway and tried to keep a storm sewer drain open, but it kept freezing up, Erbes said.

The right northbound lane of 42nd Street was closed, and Erbes reminded drivers to slow down through the area.

Lee Anderson, Fargo Public Works maintenance supervisor, said private plumbers were working to fix the leak, which happened on private property.
