BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — It didn't take long for North Dakota's freshman senator to make her debut on the Sunday morning talk show circuit.
Democratic Sen. Heidi Heitkamp appeared Sunday on CNN's "State of the Union" with Candy Crowley, along with North Carolina Republican Rep. Richard Hudson, a first-year congressman.
The two lawmakers talked about their first impressions of serving in Congress and debates over the debt ceiling and guns. Asked about possible gun control measures, Heitkamp said the issue needs a balanced approach "and then we need to live in reality."
Heitkamp said she is frustrated because it seems like she has a "greater sense of urgency" than others in Congress. She said she hopes lawmakers can start the session with "a new sense of cooperation, collaboration, and getting the job done."
