Some brave swimmers took the plunge on the first day of 2013

Europe (WDAY TV) -- Some brave swimmers, divers and water lovers across Europe braved frigid conditions to take a refreshing plunge on the first day of 2013.
At midday in the Netherlands, thousands of swimmers ran screaming across the beach to have a splash in the North Sea. People in about 60 locations around the country also took part in the coordinated dip as part of a nationwide tradition that was started in 1960.
The water temperature was around 40 degrees.
