Wahpeton, ND (WDAY TV) -- After a grocery owner refused to turn into a chain, he's handing his business over to his employees.
Sometimes all a recipe needs
"Where are the apple chunks?"
Is a little care
"I'm making fritters."
A dash of experience.
"since 1986, January of 1986, the second day the store opened."
And a heart of a baker.
"It's been a long time, laughing"
A quarter century in the making. It all started from scratch.
"Seen a lot of people come and go."
26 years later, comes news as her little sweet fritters.
"my husband had heard about it and told me when i was coming to work. He thought it was the Bemidji store, he wasn't quite sure but he thought it was them."
Jennie broker, not just a bakery employee
"I was surprised"
But now a stock owner in Econofoods
But Jennie isn't the only employee getting a piece of the pie, in fact this isn't the only grocery store either. In between Minnesota and North Dakota, five grocery stores are now partial owners.
"One of the nicest guys you can imagine"
46 years in the business, the owner is laying his little to rest.
"It's just super for everyone"
Washing his hands of the company, spreading it between each and every employee.
"This would be the start of my third year."
Royce is far from the bakery.
"Out of twenty"
But he's getting a slice too.
"Makes me and makes everybody else feel good about what they are doing"
Each piece, big or small depends on their recipe. Some taking just a dash of experience
"Yeah I do, I enjoy it."
Others....A sprinkle more.
Ownership will be split up between two stores in Bemidji and one in Wahpeton.
