Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) -- With those temperatures dipping below zero and wind chills making it seem even colder, your New Year's celebration can be downright dangerous if you're outside too long.
On a night known for celebrations..
Bjellum: "I believe the emergency rooms will be busy tonight"
Negative temperatures will make it hard for people out to party, but unfortunately, they probably won't stop them.
Bjellum: "People are going to get in trouble tonight because they're not going to think ahead and they're going to drink too much and they're going to get really cold."
Grabow: "For a night that has the potential of all of these things coming together and maybe bad things happening, cold weather does not help."
Finding a sober way home from downtown is hard enough on any given weekend..and when you pack that in with even more people waiting for rides outside, the effects will be dangerous.
Grabow: "You get a busy night like this, you know, your infrastructure can only handle so much so that's why it's up to us to use that personal responsibility to be accountable for ourselves and take care of each other."
Many people will be out bar hopping in downtown fargo, to bring in the New Year. But even in the few seconds it takes to cross the street and get from bar to bar, know you could get frostbite.
Bjellum: "Frostbite can happen really quickly. You can get very cold and get damage to your skin in seconds, as cold as it's going to be."
So he says if you do decide to hit the bars, make sure you bundle up, wait inside for rides, and always walk with a buddy. But most importantly, watch what you drink, rather than worrying too much about wearing too little.
Bjellum: "we know that alcohol does that to people. It makes them feel stronger and invincible. But it also gives you an inside warm feeling where outside you will be getting really cold, really fast."
Grabow: It's one of those nights where people want to be fashionable to bring the new year in, but at the same time, don't lose that good common sense of staying warm and staying safe."
