Detroit Lakes, MN (WDAY TV) -- With the new year approaching, we continue to look back at some of our favorite stories from 2012.
Tonight, we take you to Detroit Lakes, inside a small gym where a couple of locals enjoy a very manly hobby.
Check out these monster men, chalk up, and start their mono y mono work out.
Now before you think this is a sport of just big guys proving strength,
there is actually a lot of technique in arm wrestling, some of the best in the world are half these guys size and 10 to 15 years older.
"It's all about different moves, different styles the speed and the strength I'd say it's about 80% strength and 20% technique."
Roland and his training partner John Whitaker, compete in tournaments throughout our area. This is video from a recent one in Fargo, these two gentle giants are too modest to admit it, but they usually end up first and second.
"This to me would be very similar to walking into a boxing match, I boxed for 2 years and the adrenaline the rush of the fight, to me it's like walking into a fight."
Training is all about strengthening your grip. Pull-ups -- curls, whatever you're doing, you add a wider grip that usually spins, it forces you to stabilize with your hand.
These two met after we did a story on John opening his gym last year in D.L., Roland had just started arm wrestling when he saw me take on big John as part of that story, they put me on the wall of shame for that.
Roland is actually from one of the arm wrestling capitals of the world, Latvia, he even got to train with the national teams when he went home.
"I could not beat the women in arm wrestling the women were stronger than me and I'm somewhat strong."
Now if you're a fan of the late 80s classic "over the top" staring Sylvester Stallone, I'm sorry the tournaments are not quite as dramatic as Hollywood makes it seem.
But some of the techniques used in that movie, are real, Roland here was nice enough to show me the can opener...
"that's Over the top baby(laugh)"
After Roland showed me that move he said it's usually not that easy to pull off.
