Fergus Falls, MN (WDAY TV) - Over the next week, our sports department will look back at the best moments of 2012, tonight we start with a story about a unique run that debuted in Fergus Falls back in September.
There are many different challenges available to participants, from a 5K to a marathon, but The Viking Challenge differs from all of them with one key element: You can't be afraid to get a little dirty.
“It was different than what I thought. Slippery and cold.”
Nick Moullin, Fargo: “I didn't know if it was gonna be warm or cold, it was definitely cold, then it dries and you get all crackly.”
“It was fun a lot more muddy the more pits you went into, the last mud pit was the best.”
The three and half mile course just outside of Fergus Falls featured obstacles of hay bales, log walls, and of course plenty of mud.
The favorite among the runners was this area where participants had to hurdle several mounds of mud.
Heidi Guggenberger, Fargo: “The pond piece, three big mounds of mud, just dived right in.”
Moullin: “The last mud puddle had three hills on it. I was in my kid stature and wanted to jump into the first one, thought it was gonna be waist deep and it came up to my shoulders that was an interesting surprise.”
“You fell into a bunch of water and hat to climb up big mud hills. You needed teamwork, slipping off, I did a face dive.”
All runners agreed that the three-mile course was a challenge but a lot of fun, and it wouldn't have been the same without getting dirty.
The money raised by the event was donated to a handful of local charities to benefit cancer research.
