Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - Obesity experts are asking questions about the freedom that comes with food stamps.
Food stamps can be used to buy most anything but alcohol, tobacco, and non-food related products.
But With obesity becoming an epidemic, some wonder if food stamps should be allowed to buy unhealthy foods like pop, chips and pizza? Foods that are bad for you are often cheaper.
Melissa Sobolik, Great Plains Food Bank: "Unfortunately, the cheapest products are macaroni and cheese and ramen noodles and those unhealthy things that have a lot of empty calories."
Sobolik offered ideas like a possible incentive programs - where users would earn more food, if they chose healthier items.
But for major changes, the federal government would have to step in.
