Grand Forks, ND (WDAY TV) -- A massive effort is underway as volunteers prepare a community feast. Nearly one thousand people will be served a free meal during the Christmas Eve Dinner. That's tomorrow at St. Michael's Youth Center in Grand Forks.
This year marks the 40th anniversary of the dinner, which is made possible by donations from local businesses and community members.
Cadence Youngberg, Volunteer: "The whole essence of it is to bring the community together on Christmas Eve..those who have no place to go."
She says it's not just about the food, it's about making people feel welcome.
Cadence: "They talk to them and visit with them and wish them a Merry Christmas and get to know them a little bit."
Gary Sondreal, Volunteer: "Well there's a lot of people that don't have family and different things, and it's a nice function for everybody to get together."
And it takes about 100 volunteers and 52 turkeys to pull this dinner off.
Judy Jahnke, Volunteer: "We have so many people that come in and volunteer."
Gary: "This will take about five, six hours today and then tomorrow morning they'll start at eight in the morning."
Kayla: "All those hours are spent carving the turkeys, making cranberry sauce, dressing, coleslaw, bread and much more."
Gary: There's lots of food.
In addition to plenty of food, there will be a live band and Santa will be handing out some presents.
You can drop off desserts at the church until noon tomorrow. The dinner will be 3 to 6, and all are welcome
