Fergus Falls, MN (WDAY TV) -- Plans are being finalized on how to clean up a lake in the city of Fergus Falls.

Lake Alice on the north side of town suffers from large Algae blooms in the summer. There is too much phosphorus in the lake primarily form storm water run off.

And phosphorus from run off has been collecting since the 1950's which means the sediments at the bottom need to be cleaned. The city is looking at several options.

Mark Sievert, Fergus Falls City Administrator, says, "flushing the lake over a period of years to get rid of the phosphorous particularly in the sediment is probably more realistic than dredging the lake or lowering it and excavating or that but that's just kind of preliminary at least what I've been told."

Flushing the lake may take up to 15 years to lower the phosphorous.
