ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — St. Paul police have released the name of a man shot dead by police after he allegedly robbed a grocery store.
He was identified Tuesday as 20-year-old Melvin Duane Fletcher Jr. of Brooklyn Park.
Police were called to the robbery at Kowalski's Markets just after 8:30 a.m. Monday. As officers arrived they learned the suspect — later identified as Fletcher — had run out of the store through a rear entrance. Officers saw the suspect and ran after him.
At least one of the officers shot Fletcher. Paramedics took the suspect to Regions Hospital, where he died.
The two officers involved are identified as Theodore Mackintosh, an 11-year department veteran, and Jeffrey Thissen, a 10-year veteran. Both are on standard administrative leave.
An investigation continues.
