Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - Law enforcement is seeing a drastic increase in the number of permits issued, allowing people to carry concealed weapons.

That from authorities in both Cass and Clay Counties. The Cass County Sheriff's Office says so far this year, it's issued nearly 1,000 permits. That's about 300 more than last year.

Clay County issued more than 230 permits this year. That's up more than 100 from last year.

The Sheriff's Offices say while people may not always be packing heat, it's more common than you may think.

Sheriff Bill Bergquist, Clay County: “I think some people are just doing it to prepare themselves, not necessarily wanting to carry it at the moment. But just in case."

Sgt. Tara Morris, Cass County : "It's going through a number of agencies, check are being done, and if there is a history of offenses, violent crime, drugs, they will be denied."

Minnesota as a whole issued 10,000 more permits than last year, bringing that total to 30,000.
