Devils Lake, ND (WDAY TV) -- Family, friends, and fellow soldiers honored a local hero today, saying goodbye to Sargent First Class Darren Linde. The guardsman was killed early this month, when his vehicle hit a roadside bomb in Afghanistan.

The final roll call.

"Sargent Darren Linde."

Of a soldier finally home...

"Sargent First Class Darren Linde."

After making the ultimate sacrifice.

Maj. Gen. David Spryncznatyk/ND National Guard: "He died fighting for the freedoms we all so much enjoy."

Now, friends and family honored that service and that sacrifice.

Lt. Col. Robert Fugere: "Sargent Linde was a great soldier. But he was much more than that."

Colleagues called him a warrior.

Sgt. 1st Class Jon Pearson: "A warrior is a soldier who can not stand the idea of his fellow warriors going into harm's way without him to have his back."

Fugere: "Darren was all army, but he was family first."

At Camp Grafton, where Linde trained soldiers for four years, they made sure the family knew he would not be forgotten.

Fugere: "Once you met Darren, you never forgot him."

Spryncnatyk: "We will never forget the service and sacrifice of Sargent 1st class Linde."

Linde's service and valor were commemorated with thee awards...the bronze star.

Spryncnatyk: "Is one of the highest awards any soldier can receive."

Purple heart...Comes about only because of the sacrifice that a soldier has made for his country. And North Dakota Legion of Merit. After the honors, every soldier lined up to pay their respects to Linde before his family said one last goodbye.

Linde was laid to rest in his hometown of Sidney, Montana on Tuesday. 20-year-old specialist Tyler Orgaard, also killed in the attack, was buried in Bismarck, his home town, on Thursday.
