Great Bend, ND (WDAY TV) - A family from Great Bend, North Dakota is trying to pick up the pieces after a fire destroyed everything they have.

Les Bergstrom's rural farmhouse burned down Sunday afternoon while his two daughters were inside.

Les Bergstrom and his daughter Paige walk around the ruins of the home they've held for fourteen years.

Paige Bergstrom, Escaped Farmhouse Fire: "It was big, it was white."

But on Sunday a fire broke out, while Paige and her sister were still inside.

Bergstrom: "It was about 10:30 when I noticed the smoke started coming up."

At first she didn't think much of it. Les was on his way back from a hunting trip, the two girls alone on the main level.

Bergstrom: "It started to get really bad so me and my sister, we both went upstairs.”

But soon flames began to engulf the walls, now completely turned to ash.

Bergstrom: "I saw fire so we grabbed the dog from the basement and drove down the road."

Four fire crews from surrounding communities responded, but it was too late. The house, a four-wheeler, and a car nearby that Paige got for a graduation present, all a total loss.

Bergstrom: "It sucks. I wish it was up."

But as they sift through what's left of their belongings, Paige and her dad say they will build back the memories that even a fire can't take away.

Fire crews say the blaze most likely began after an electrical problem with the furnace. The community is trying to organize a benefit and donations for the family.
