BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — The North Dakota Game and Fish Department is cautioning winter anglers about early ice.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — The North Dakota Game and Fish Department is cautioning winter anglers about early ice.

Officials say ice on lakes might not be safe this time of year for a number of reasons, including daily temperature swings that affect ice strength and significant variations in ice thickness even in small areas.

KOVC radio reports that a couple of ice fishing houses fell through the ice on Lake Ashtabula last week.

Anglers are encouraged to take precautions such as wearing a lifejacket and carrying a cellphone.
