Minnesota (WDAY TV) -- A Minnesota woman's story of survival, perseverance and a comeback is second to few. She suffered severe burns after a helicopter crash and explosion, but now is a beauty queen and inspiration to burn victims.
Sarah Bazey looks like a woman born to be a beauty queen, but parts of her body reveal a story of heartbreak.
Sarah: "The flames came around and hit me and I'm on fire."
In 1994 Bazey was in a helicopter crash near Minneapolis. She was stuck inside as it exploded.
Sarah: Ii'm in a bench seat, it blows me backward flames come flying around me and i can see them."
40% of her body had 3rd degree burns, it'd take years and multiple skin grafts for full recovery.
Sarah: "It's pain beyond words ."
But what a comeback she's living. This year winning 3 Mrs. International pageants, first in Minneapolis then on the state level in March then finally on the world stage
Part of what got her here, her work with burn victims. And just imagine the inspiration she brings into a hospital room.
Sarah: "There's really know way of getting burned without a traumatic event occurring, you have social aspects because you're now scarred, things are different."
It could have kept her down for life, instead she's now on a world tour, crown in hand, and a case that gets as much attention, sharing her story of strength and perseverance.
Sarah: "I'm just certain that I'm right where I'm supposed to be and things have happened just as they were supposed to happen and as painful and horrible as it was a lot of wonderful things have happened in my life and I'm very thankful and grateful."
Bazey was in Fargo last weekend to judge the North Dakota Junior, Miss and Mrs. International pageants.
