Crookston, MN (WDAY TV) -- It was quite the scene in Crookston this morning, as people stood out in the snow to watch firefighters battle a blaze. Thankfully this was a planned fire part of hands on training.

New members of the Crookston Fire Department and students from Minnesota State Community and Technical College got to experience what a real house fire is like.

Instructors say an opportunity like this is rare, and valuable.

Rick Loveland, MSCTC Fire Program Manager, says, "We can talk about all the different aspects of firefighting, but until they actually experience the real process of what actually they're going to be encountering, there's nothing that can describe it and there's no way to explain it in a classroom."

The owner donated the house.
