Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) -- Tense moments overnight, a man led police on a high speed chase across state lines, then took off and fell through ice on the frigid Red River.
Officers were able to rescue him. Police tried to pull the man over for a traffic violation in Moorhead. But he sped away, going 50 miles per hour into Fargo.
The vehicle then went off the road. The man ran onto thin ice, falling through, near 1st Avenue North around 2:45 this morning. He was in the cold water for a couple minutes before grabbing a rope officers had thrown him.
Ryan McCollum, an eyewitness, says, "I didn't even know what I was looking at when I came across, but it was a car up on the curb here and I didnt know at the time, but it had hit this bike rack and It actually drug the bike rack into me, I swerved away from the car, the bike rack wedged underneath my truck and the car swerved out of control and hit the building behind it."
The man faces charges including felony fleeing. His name hasn't been released. He was taken to Sanford hospital for treatment
