Mapleton, ND (WDAY TV) -- All bar owners and smokers in North Dakota are adjusting tonight. The stiffer, statewide smoking ban is in effect.
While some bar owners are tweaking a less strict smoking ban they already had in place, others are seeing a smoking ban for the first time. And learning what it means.
The owner here at Hagge's Bar and Grill is upset with this one rule fits all businesses, he feels the state didn't take into consideration some bars, his in particular, that spent a lot of money to attract smokers and non smokers.
This facility was built to suit smoking, while keeping non-smokers from noticing.
The owner himself is a non-smoker.
Garland Hagermeister: "people go to bars they smoke and people go to bars they don't smoke, I built it so they could both be compatible."
Garland Hagermeister built the bar and grill 10 years ago. He put in a 30 foot ceiling and spent $40-thousand dollars on 2 monster ventilation systems, one for the smoking side and one on the non-smoking side.
Hagermeister: "they have a choice here, they had a choice."
He says it takes 15 minutes to get all new air in here. He's upset because now, all of these extra costs, are for nothing
Hagermeister: "the problem for me it's just a general deal everybody is treated the same well this place isn't the same as most bars because it's designed for smoking and non smokers."
Hagermeister says business out here in Mapleton picked up when Fargo went smoke free, but isn't worried about losing too much with the new ban. He's more concerned about increased regulation.
Hagermeister: "when they come down to the point where I can only sell 10oz. bottles of coke I might be in trouble."
Take a look at this, Hagermeister is already getting started on a smoking shed. He says he'll get the tape measure out and put this exactly 20 feet from the door.
