FARGO – Police say a Fargo woman suspected of passing at least a dozen bad checks at businesses around town over the past month was arrested Wednesday evening while trying to pawn jewelry she allegedly bought with one of the bad checks.

Kelly Anne Tigerstrom, 39, was arrested on suspicion of felony theft by deception.

Lt. Joel Vettel said Tigerstrom allegedly used a fraudulent check for more than $1,200 to buy jewelry at White Diamonds and then tried to pawn it five blocks away at Pawn America, 3520 13th Ave. S. Police were called to the pawn shop at about 6:05 p.m.

Police suspect Tigerstrom of passing bad checks at multiple businesses, including downtown businesses that participated in a Nov. 29 “Cheer-ity Night” fundraiser for the Great Plains Food Bank, Vettel said.

The latest checks passed were for higher amounts, he said, adding he expects the total of all the checks to be thousands of dollars.

“We’re still investigating the total number of instances, but we believe at least 12 to 15 checks have been passed,” Vettel said.

In many of the cases, the suspect passed the checks by showing IDs that weren’t state-issued, he said.

“Without verifying that on a state-issued ID, that certainly limits the ability for the retailer to be able to spot that fraudulent-type of behavior,” he said.

Vettel said he knows retailers are busy this time of year, but they are encouraged to scrutinize checks and verify the information with a government-issued ID.
