Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - Bar owners across the state are gearing up before North Dakota's new ban takes effect tomorrow.
Smokers will no longer be allowed to light up within 20 feet of a business door or window.
The rules come after bars like Tailgators in Fargo spent thousands on smoking shacks nearby their businesses, now deemed illegal.
Tailgators employees have spent the last few days moving ashtrays and shelters, communicating with the health department, and will soon print off signs indicating designated smoking areas.
Ricky Nymark, Tailgators Owner: “The perimeter to have a little bit of a cushion to keep people away from doorways. 20 feet is probably a little too much in my opinion. About 10 would seem reasonable but it is what it is so we've got to work with it.”
If an individual violates the smoking ban, it's a $50 fine. Owners can be fined $100 for the first offense, and may ultimate get liquor licenses taken away for additional violations.
