Fargo clinic using new tracking technology for staff, equipment

Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - There has been yet another amazing transformation to a section of downtown. This time on NP Avenue.

The Family Health Care clinic is celebrating its grand opening in the old Buick Dealership building and as part of the new $15 million complex, is a piece of new technology that is a combination of James Bond and NASA.

Never before have the old and new come together to make health care more accessible and efficient for the 12,000 patients who use the Family Health Care Center downtown. And as part of the new facility on NP, staff and patients will be wearing high tech tags like these, called Real Time Location Software.

Pat Gulbranson, Family Health Care: “It allows us to maximize our staff time for patient care.”

It works like this, nurses, doctors, and staff will wear this tag which allows the clinic to know wear everyone is at all times. With 12-different languages spoken here, the seven interpreters can be located when needed.

Gulbranson: “Various calling mechanisms, and features in the cards, want to call a provider, just press these buttons to alert and more efficient than how we do it today.”

And even medical equipment and inventory will have a tag meaning staff won't have to search three floors for equipment.

And patients will be wearing the tags, which allows the staff to monitor long waits, or patients who are new and are lost.

Gulbranson: “As we get used to the new facility and know the flow we see the trouble spots where are they hung up because of lack of info or education, or in emergency we can locate them in the facility.”

The number of patients, 75 percent who are uninsured or under-insured has increased from 6,000 to 12,000 in just six years. The new space meets a critical demand in our community, providing care for those who would have nowhere else to turn. And new technology just made it a more efficient system.

The new and larger center is expected to handle 40 visits in its first year.
