Moorhead, MN (WDAY TV) -- A Moorhead woman got the chance of a lifetime, an all-expenses paid trip overseas to meet her long-lost relatives.

But it came with one catch. She had battle it out in a tough competition, while filming a reality T-V show.

Moorhead native Amy Hesteness didn't always embrace her Norwegian roots.

Hesteness: "Growing up mixed, I always focused on the fact that I was half-black."

So when she signed up for a Norwegian Reality TV show on a whim...

Hesteness:" I never in a million years thought I would get chosen."

But then, this happened.

Hesteness; "I feel honored to be here."

On a heart-pumping, adrenaline-racing adventure that in English, is called, All for Norway.

Hesteness: "Whoever wins the competition gets to meet their Norwegian relatives."

Amy battled through the competition, even sampling our favorite Norwegian dish.

Hesteness: "Lutefisk tastes like wet rubber. It was hard to chew, hard to swallow, I tried to mix it with everything I could, just to get it down."

All for a life-changing chance to connect with her ancestors, and learn her history.

Hesteness: "To feel cherished as a Norwegian American really helped me personally."

Amy was hoping for a win. If that happens, the show brings your relatives to you. Yet in the end. This competition caught her off-guard.

Hesteness: "learn a phrase in a dialect, run down, and then him, and if I said it wrong, I had to run back to the first person, re-learn it, and go back."

Hesteness: " This did not going to go quite as well as I hoped."

The defining moment knocked her out of the running

Hesteness: "I just wanted to be in the finals. It's so easy to go for a walk here, it's so easy to escape the mind, and nature. Moorhead is not this beautiful."

Despite the loss, there is a happy ending. The show passed along Amy's contact information to her relatives. So she's keeping in touch with her cousins.
