Grand Forks, ND (WDAY TV) -- The K-E-M Shriners of Grand Forks kicked off the month in style with its annual Christmas party to benefit the Shriner's Hospital for Children in Minneapolis.

Children got to sit on Santa's lap, and even received an early Christmas present. One father says events like this offer up a good time and a sense of normalcy to children and families battling diseases.

His daughters have scoliosis of the spine, but he says they are doing well and the future looks bright.

Dennis Hansel says, "Our motto is having fun helping kids, so that's what we do. Their attitudes and everything with their disabilities it's just really really rewarding to see that."

The hospital relies solely on donations and provides care regardless of the families ability to pay.
