Devils Lake, ND (WDAY TV) -- Good news coming out of all this cold, the ice is thick enough on Devils Lake to support ice fishing.

The ice at Woodland Resorts measures between four and five inches, that's enough to support walking out on the ice. A word of warning, ice does get thinner further out on the lake, and there are still some bare spots.

If you do decided to break out the ice drills this weekend, experts stress the importance of carrying picks and a life jacket and taking other safety precautions.

Jeff Katzer with Woodland Resorts says, "Four inches of ice is definitely recommended for just foot travel alone, and foot travel means not you and your buddy right next to each other. Span out about 20-30 feet to vary the weight."

Katzer says he hopes the ice will be thick enough next weekend to use A-T-Vs to tow ice sheds out on the lake.
