Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) -- Violence is something law enforcement deals with on a day to day basis, but losing an officer in the line of duty is a harsh reminder of the reality of the job.

Local officers say Decker's death is a tragedy. They say whenever you go out on a call, you never know what you may be walking into or what you are going to see. They say their hearts go out to the family...especially since Decker has four young children.

Lt. Rod Haijcek with the East Grand Forks Police Dept. says, "It was a routine call and I am sure he had no idea what he was walking into and that can happen, but it is part of the job but it does make you feel horrible."

Lt. Dwight Love says, "When you go to 3, 4 calls and everything goes good you get complacent, so it's kind of a good reminder, even though it's bad it happened."

Local officers say they have dealt with shootings in the past, but it doesn't happen in this area very often.
