A Minnesota officer is killed in the line of duty

Cold Spring, MN (WDAY TV) -- A police officer in central Minnesota has been shot and killed in the line of duty in what authorities are calling an ambush killing.

Cold Spring, MN (WDAY TV) -- A police officer in central Minnesota has been shot and killed in the line of duty in what authorities are calling an ambush killing.

The officer has been identified as 31-year-old Thomas Decker. The suspect has been identified as 34-year-old Ryan Michael Larson.

The Stearns County Sheriff first got a call from concerned family members around 9 about a suicidal man. Cold Spring police went to his apartment.

No one came to the door, so Police returned almost two hours later. That's when Decker, who was wearing a bullet proof vest was shot twice and died.

No one else was injured.

Police blocked off the area and searched for a sawed off shotgun. They arrested Larson on murder charges shortly after midnight.

Sheriff John Sanner of Stearns County says, "officers pulled up, officer decker left his squad car and a very short time later was confronted by an arnmed individual and shot twice."

Chief Phil Jones with the Cold Spring Police says, "We're going to miss him, the community and all of law enforcement."

Decker was known as the department's jokester, was active in the community and well liked. Decker is married with four young children.
