Police advice you to be careful with your identity while shopping

Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) -- Whether you're the President or an average shopper,

police say it's the time of year you need to be careful with your identity.

Police say identity thieves see the shopping season as easy pick-ins. Some tips -- always know where your wallet is, don't carry a lot of cards and cash. More cards is just more chances for theft and cash is nearly impossible to recover.

If your identity is stolen, immediately cancel all of your bank cards and call police .

Lt. Joel Vettel with the Fargo Police Dept says, "Really, timing is of an essence, because oftentimes, the thefts we do see.. They result in somebody immediately utilizing those cards. They aren't gonna wait several days, typically, to use them. They're gonna use them within the first couple of hours."

Police say the biggest thing they see is purses taken from abandoned shopping carts.
