Moorhead, MN (WDAY TV) -- Many people were able to sit down today surrounded by family and enjoy Thanksgiving dinner. For those not as fortunate, there's the Community dinner put on by 2 Moorhead Churches.

No matter who you are or what your story is, this is place where anyone can come and eat on Thanksgiving. Phillip Hamre and his wife came to St. Joe's Catholic church for their turkey dinner. Their busy family had other holiday plans.

Phillip Hamre/Moorhead Resident: "we have kids here and they all have their own thing to do with their in-laws. So, us Grandpa and Grandma are left alone."

Talk about community, this meal gives people with out family a little company this holiday. Especially those who are homeless and hungry, or

just want to spend time with the community.

And the guests become like a family, with some of the same people coming year after year and making it part of their tradition.

Jennifer Hansen/Moorhead: "We do this every year. We come out here to have Thanksgiving dinner and just kind of, be here as a family."

This isn't your typical Thanksgiving at Grandma's house. To pull off this dinner takes 800 pounds of turkey and 400 pounds of mashed potatoes.

All that food means plenty of volunteers taking time out of their own holiday to help out. Troy Fuller started bringing his family to serve dinner last year.

Troy: "try to show our family that there's more to Thanksgiving than just ourselves. And spending time with serving other people.

This is the 18th year St. Joe's and Trinity teamed up for the free meal.
