Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) -- The Fargo Fire Department says people need to understand the dangers of flames caused by cigarettes.

Over the past 18 months, it fought 40 fires started from improperly disposed cigarettes. The flames have racked up about half a million dollars in property damage across Fargo.

Crews say most are caused from people putting them out in unapproved containers. Ashes catch spreading flames to nearby structures very quickly.

Fargo Fire Chief, Steve Dirksen, says, "fortunately we have had minor injuries as a result of this but it's something that causes us concern when we have these happening in apartment buildings. Someday we're going to be looking at a possible fatality."

Firefighters say make sure the cigarette is completely out.
