Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - It's incredible how people instantly step up to help others in times of need.

A woman collapsed in the street during the Holiday Lights Parade and in an instant, two nurses from the crowd rushed in to save her life.

Without the pair jumping to action, who knows what would've happened to the woman. Talking with the nurses today, you can tell how proud they were, thankful they could be in the right place, at the right time.

At the Holiday Lights Parade, two best friends were taking in the bright, colorful displays near Fort Knox with their families.

Cindy Toftgruben, Essentia PACU Nurse: "We were commenting on how great the floats were."

That's when Essentia nurses Cindy Troftgruben and Nicole Christensen were forced to make a split-second, life-saving decision.

Nicole Christensen, Essentia House Supervisor: "About 10 feet from us there was an individual who collapsed."

Cindy: "Turned to Nicole and said ‘Nic let's go, come help me.’"

The pair reacted immediately, tossing their children's candy bags in their hand, hurrying to start CPR.

Christensen: "Didn't even think about it, we just sprung into action, and knew what we needed to do."

Troftgruben: "We couldn't find a pulse, tried to talk ourselves into finding the pulse."

Christensen: "We were a bit out of our comfort zone, we are used to having oxygen where we need it, and an ambu bag when we need it."

Another Essentia doctor and an AED came into the mix, and finally - the woman started to respond before an ambulance rushed her to Sanford. Both women returned to their families, relieved.

Christensen: "And my daughter said ‘Mommy, what did you do? Did you save that lady's life?’ And I said, ‘Actually we might have.’”

Sanford tells us the woman is Roxanne Burnside. She's in stable, satisfactory condition.
