Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - The Fargo Fire Department is sending out a heated warning, just in time for Thanksgiving.

Firefighters gathered to demonstrate what can go wrong when people improperly use turkey fryers.

The most common errors come when cooks put frozen turkeys into boiling oil, use too much oil, or get the oil too hot creating flames and even larger problems for firefighters.

They say if you want to fry your bird for the big day, make sure to follow instructions.

Matt Nelson, Fargo Fire Dept.: “We discourage the use of them just because of the dangers involved. There is a safe way to do it however. In the city of Fargo we've seen enough injuries and fires caused by deep frying a turkey to just discourage the use of them.”

Nelson says the fire department usually responds to at least one turkey fryer fire each Thanksgiving.
