Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - With a jump in holiday travel the next few days, troopers in North Dakota and Minnesota will be saturating the region in an effort to reduce drunk driving related deaths.
The Minnesota State Patrol has released its list of Top 13-Dangerous counties in the state. And Otter Tail and Becker Counties have made the list, joining the other 10 in 160 drunk driving deaths for 2009 through 2011.
The crackdown on drunk driving in Minnesota and North Dakota this Thanksgiving comes as the MN Dept. of Public Safety announces the top 13 counties account for half of all DWI deaths in Minnesota the last two year. Twenty-five of those deaths from Becker and Otter Tail counties.
Sgt. Jesse Grabow, Minnesota State Patrol: “They are larger counties and they do see more traffic because of tourism and with the holiday weekend and kicking this off it is good reminder to use good common sense when they get behind the wheel”
And so this weekend, state and local agencies will be targeting these and other counties during the busy Thanksgiving Travel Period. One of the most dangerous and deadliest of the year.
Grabow: “If you are going to get out and party fine but make sure you have a safe and sober ride set out ahead of time.”
In the last two years in Minnesota, six of 11-traffic deaths during Thanksgiving were connected to drunk drivers. And 1,600 people were arrested for DWI.
The North Dakota state patrol has announced it too will step up its traffic enforcement with a special safety campaign during the holidays.
