Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) -- With Thanksgiving now right around the corner, people will be frying turkeys, hanging holiday lights and picking out Christmas trees. Sounds like a lot of fun, but there are some reminders with that.
First responders say a lapse in common sense, and any of those activities could turn to disaster.
It's that time of year, where first responders get called to a host of emergency calls.
One that is most damaging to property: putting a frozen turkey in the fryer. Just look at what happens.
The most calls however, come from people falling off ladders while decking out their homes.
Cpt. Binfet: "Leaning too far on the ladder, or the ladder isn't set up properly against their house. So, practice good safety, remember that it's slippery out this time of year."
Troy Olson and his family are continuing a holiday tradition, stringing lights around their trees.
Olson: "We're coming out and decorating because it's such a beautiful day. And we bought some Christmas lights, of course we were at Menard's, and everybody's buying Christmas lights."
They are wary of the fire hazards that come along with the holiday season...
Particularly, with lights.
Olson: "LED lights of course, and we just make sure that everything is safe and plugged in right."
If you're buying a fresh tree, make sure to cut off a layer at bottom of the trunk, so it can soak up the water more easily. A dried out tree can be a huge fire hazard.
This video shows just how fast a dry tree goes up in flames. Firefighters say remember your common sense and you'll keep these disasters from striking this holiday season.
