HURDSFIELD, N.D. – A woman getting the mail from her home here was killed when an oncoming semi struck her van Friday afternoon.
According to the North Dakota Highway Patrol:
A 52-year-old woman had just picked up her mail from her home mailbox along the southbound lane of state Highway 3.
As she made a slow U-turn to head north from the mailbox, a semi also heading north crested the hilltop. The semi moved into the left lane to pass the woman’s van, but the women turned left, in front of the oncoming semi, trying to get onto a gravel road that led to her home.
The semi struck the driver’s side of the van, sending it into the west ditch, facing south.
The semi, which was hauling an empty flatbed trailer, jackknifed on the road, blocking both lanes of travel.
The woman died at the scene.
The driver of the semi, a 26-year-old man from Holyoke, Colo., was not injured.
The identities of those involved have not yet been released as the crash remains under investigation by the North Dakota Highway Patrol.
Hurdsfield is in central North Dakota, about 80 miles northwest of Jamestown.
