Barnes County (WDAY TV) -- 4 burglary suspects in Barnes County are on the run tonight. Authorities say they stole around 20-thousand dollars worth of items during a September spree.
Police say this case involves 2 couples, one from Valley City the other from Rochester, Minnesota. They say the group was stealing from homes and businesses in Barnes County and then taking everything to Rochester to sell it.
Here are 3 of the 4 people police are searching for tonight. They're 32 year old Broc Buytaert and 31 year old Betsy Runkle both from Rochester, Minnesota. 36 year old Steve Hovland and not pictured is 25 year old April Kapaun are both from Valley City.
Combined the group faces 50 felony charges.
Authorities say Buytaert and Hovland are old friends.
Wick Construction in Valley City is one of the 9 spots the group allegedly hit.
Don Fiebiger/Barnes County Chief Deputy: "it started the first part of September and it stretched all ends of our county, the western end of the county we had them way up in the northern end of the county and the south end.."
Authorities say the group got away with things like antiques, scrap metal, saddles, generators, expensive specialized tools, etc. And though the merchandise was random, the places hit police say were planned out.
Fiebiger: "I believe they were scouting them out i believe they spent a lot of time on the road looking, some of the interviews we found out yes they had been by this place before and no one was home so they went back to check stuff like that.."
Authorities caught a break in this case when a passerby near Moorhead called in a domestic, Buytaert and Runkle were allegedly in a fight on the side of a road, police showed up and noticed the couple had a lot of random items in their truck, and they matched description from some of the Barnes County burglaries.
Authorities then executed a search warrant at the couple's Rochester home,
where they found more stolen items. To date about 85-hundred dollars worth of stolen property is recovered.
Also while police were searching the home Buytaert showed up, they say he had meth on him and more was found in his home. But all of this evidence does nothing right now, because tonight all 4 are on the loose.
