MOORHEAD – About 30 people were involved in a late-night scuffle in a church parking lot here Sunday that led to a Fargo man being accused in a stabbing, according to a criminal complaint filed Tuesday in Clay County District Court.
Christopher Gray, 25, has been charged with second- and third-degree assault after police say he stabbed a man outside a baby shower held at First Congregational Church just after 2 a.m., the charges filed Tuesday read.
Gray was a part of a group of males who were denied access to the event, and they got into a fight with partygoers as they were leaving the church, leading to the alleged stabbing, the complaint states.
According to the complaint, a relative told police that Stanford Avorklya, 27, of Spring Lake Park, was “trying to keep the peace” after the fight broke out when Gray swung at him.
Avorklya was eventually taken to the emergency room at Essentia Health in Fargo, where he underwent surgery for stab wounds to his lungs and kidneys, police say in the complaint.
An Essentia spokeswoman said Tuesday night that Avorklya did not want to release his condition.
Two knives were recovered at the scene, one of them near the vehicle Gray was occupying, the complaint states.
Police have said they believe at least one of these knives was used in the alleged assault.
Gray is being held at Clay County Jail on $50,000 bail without conditions, $25,000 with conditions, court records show.
The maximum punishment for second-degree assault is 10 years in prison, a $20,000 fine or both. Third-degree assault is punishable by up to five years in prison and a $10,000 fine.
