A new vest could give you a "hug" every time you get a "like" on Facebook

Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) -- Can you imagine getting a "hug" every time you get a "like" on Facebook?

M.I.T. researchers have made that a reality, inventing a vest that gives you a squeeze after your online friends click their mouse.

Instead of hugging in person, did you ever think you could get a squeeze from someone anywhere in the world? Or better yet, from your clothing?

John Bessette/Minot resident: (what do you think of this Facebook vest idea?) "Flat out, I think that's really weird."

It's called the Like A Hug, and the idea alone is causing quite the talk among social media goers.

Ellittla Ironeyes/Bismarck resident: "I think it's pretty sweet, I guess."

Each vest is connected to someone's Facebook account. So when you're wearing it and someone likes your page, the vest gives you a little squeeze.

Sredna Taggart/Baltimore resident: "for every like? People like a lot of things."

The brains behind the vest come all the way from MIT and the goal- to put smiles onto the faces of those having a bad day.

Deneen Gilmour/MSUM Journalism Professor: "some people need to hug somebody. "

Often for people too far away from their friends, to feel the warmth.

But if you're not actually hugging a person, would it be worth the purchase?

Bessette: (do you think you would ever buy something like that?) "Never, if I wanted a hug I would go to someone I love."

Taggart: "I don't know, it's like getting a hug maybe from someone you wouldn't want a hug from."

And if the idea itself isn't strange enough, these shoppers say the scariest part is knowing social media may be headed in that direction.

Gilmour: "A lot of these start as close relationships and if we only tend to that relationship online, does it become superficial?"

Bessette: "It's kind of sad actually that people can't communicate in real life anymore."

But nonetheless, definitely something to laugh about. The vest started as an art project and may never reach shelves, but its creators say you'd even be able to return the hug after receiving one.
