Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) -- Bad news for NDSU hoping to get it's stolen SUV back. Fargo police are on the lookout for a person who stole the vehicle, then drove it into the Red River.

When firefighters got on scene, here at the 1400 block of Elm Street, the first thing they did was get into the freezing cold water and check out the vehicle. But, they didn't find anybody inside.

Authorities from Fargo and Moorhead then searched the surrounding water and riverbanks, but found no one there either.

The SUV was covered in snow, likely submerged for hours.

Once the SUV was pulled up, police discovered it was a stolen official campus vehicle from NDSU.

Sgt. Kevin Pallas/Fargo Police Dept.: "What we believe occurred, is somebody intentionally put it into the river, either allowed it to roll down that hill at Elm Street, and went into the river, or drove it in, or something similar to that."

The vehicle had not been reported stolen, but police say it was likely taken within the past few days.

If you have any information, contact Fargo Police.
