Grand Forks, ND (WDAY TV) -- Ice is building up on Grand Forks streets, and people are rushing for those last minute items.

Road crews spend days preparing for this weekend's expected snowfall. Despite all that work, the focus has now shifted from snow, to slippery streets.

For now, rain has coated the streets making them a little icy and putting a fork in people's weekend plans.

"Obviously it'll dampen my travel plans."

Some are getting out while they can.

"Uh I'm heading south to St. Cloud."

Those staying in town to bare the storm are stocking up....

Tom: "Getting some fuel and got my food and groceries at home so that's about it."

...and clearing store shelves.

Daniel Waltz/HOME OF ECONOMY: "We've been selling a lot of shovels and ice scrapers and salt, tires, our honda supplies, generators, and snow blowers."

While the little ones are crossing their fingers it's one for the books.

little girl: "I can't wait to build a snowman and also an igloo."

The dangerous thing about this storm is these wet roads will ice over sometime during the night, making roadways which appear clear very slippery.

Ron Frevig: "I'll be monitoring the weather obviously and I won't be driving if conditions are hazardous tomorrow."

But the vets say it's just another day in the life of a North Dakotan.

Tom Quinn: "Just another storm, one of many."

Ron: "Nervous? I've lived here so I'm used to this type of thing."
