New merchant downtown has business in his blood

Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) -- Our next story is about invention, entrepreneurship and some good business blood. Another store is about to open in downtown Fargo, and the young man behind the store's name is a blooming businessman and visionary. And he's just 19!

Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) -- Our next story is about invention, entrepreneurship and some good business blood. Another store is about to open in downtown Fargo, and the young man behind the store's name is a blooming businessman and visionary. And he's just 19!

"Where are the end caps?"

Today Joe Burgum hustled to get some last minute details finished before friends and family come for tonight's sneak peak at downtown Fargo's Newest Store.

Have some North Dakota Themed T-shirts. That conversation started in June as a far out idea. TAG. T-shirts, art and graphics. From local artists on shirts.

Joe Burgum: "We feel it is an important part of our community to celebrate the wonderful artists and designers we have."

Joe calls this a pop up store an experiment of sorts. An extreme retail makeover.

Burgum: "You have culture makers and culture takers and we want to be able to have an impact on our community downtown and what it stands for and know the neighbors."

He is the newest and by far the youngest merchant to put out a shingle downtown, 1st avenue north and Broadway, just west of Halberstads. All this from a teenager who loves doing business and being creative in North Dakota.

Burgum: "It could change it could be a t-shirt store or it could morph into design house who knows at this point."

Joe comes from a family of entreprenuers. His great grandfather JA Burgum Started the Arthur Family elevator back in 1911. And since then, the Burgums have successfully branched out, grandparents Joseph and Katherine, right on down to Joe's father Doug Burgum, of the Kilbourne group.

Joe's mother, downtown business owner Karen Stoker of the HoDo and Bras on Broadway fame. But while they have mentored Joe, this has been Joe's dream and project. No helicopter parenting here.

Burgum: "It is great to have parents so supportive sometimes they out cool me but we have a good parent son relationship."

Joe was instrumental in the Fill the Dome project. He is taking lessons learned then, to fill downtown with a young man's business and cultural leap.

The TAG store will be open tomorrow before the Bison-Jackrabbits game, then will officially open Tuesday.
